The Bay Area Baracus Rugby Football Club played its first match in approximately late April/early May of 2001. It was against Aptos. They won 10-0. Nobody took any pictures. This was to be a reoccuring theme for the young rugby club.
Here’s the current oldest known Baracus picture. It’s definitely from 2001. Note the original Williams jerseys. These cobbled together jerseys were the first Baracus uniform and gave Baracus its maroon and gold color scheme.
Baracus experienced great success on the field during their first several seasons. The club made the playoffs in its first five years of existence.
In 2002 Baracus advanced to the Division III final four after an epic come-from-behind win over Naples (Florida) RFC. Apparently no pictures of this game exist.
In 2003 Baracus made the national tournament again, only to fall to the eventual national runner-up Tempe in the round of 32. Pictures may have been taken, but we can’t find them. Here’s a picture of the classic 2002 A side that made such a splash in Northern California Second Division.
Some pre-game huddle at some point in the 2003 season:
The team did manage to remember to take a group picture upon it’s third consecutive trip to the playoffs. Again Baracus was unable to break into the national Sweet 16, losing a very tough match to Red Mountain in the round of 32. Perhaps the team should’ve have been messing around on that island.
